This sinner might seem a little bit cocky and overzealous; remember this is for a good reason. Though he lacks memories of his time before being part of the Company, it’s highly recommended you do not search for what he forgot. Sometimes memories are not worth remembering. His personality may annoy you, but do not underestimate what's in the book.
"Do not mock the fools; their madness lasts longer than ours ... That's the only difference."
Hildred Castiagne is designated Sinner #⏹⏹ of Limbus Company’s LCB department. He works independently from any team, and is considered a “Freelance Sinner” – they put him wherever he’s needed. Castiagne is a cocky and confident man, claiming he was someone important in his past life – though he does not remember it. He carries around the titular book The King in Yellow, and he claims that once he is able to open it, he will be powerful again. He was previously the color fixer, The Yellow King though he is unable to remember it. He is the focus character of Canto ⏹⏹: The Forgotten. You can view more about him here, as it has information not listed on the site.
Appearance
Castiagne is a tall slender man with long, messy honey blonde hair. He has bright yellow downturned eyes and is often seen with a quaint smile. His eyebrows are the same color as his hair. His work uniform consists of a brown turtleneck and the LCB coat, though it is cloak instead of a normal jacket. He wears black pants with a black belt, and brown boots. His previous identity, The Yellow King – or Hastur, wears a long yellow layered cloak and a white mask. His ego gear, Carcosa Remnants, are long black tendrils that can be mistaken for shadows, until touched.
Personality
Flamboyant, egotistical, cocky and overzealous, Castiagne has more negative traits than positive ones. He holds his head high and considers most people beneath him. He thinks of himself as prince of sorts, not quite the King yet with his forgotten memories. He claims that once he opens the book, and his memories come back, he will be more powerful than anyone else can imagine. Hastur, on the other hand, is quiet, speculative and philosophical, often questioning if the City is much better than the things that lie in the Outskirts. Once a patient archeologist and explorer, Hastur had a personality shift once discovering the remnants of the city Carcosa. He became violent, angry and dangerous, which led to his massacre once returning to the City. He wields a singular long knife he calls Hastur due to the name etched onto the blade. This is a reference to the short story Repairer of Reputations, as the protagonist murders someone with a long kitchen knife.
Backstory
Upon joining X-Corp’s Expedition team under the mentorship of Professor Archer, Castaigne considered himself an adventurer and archeologist of lost civilizations and remnants of cities in the Outskirts of the city. He trained under Professor Archer and became a powerful fixer, though focusing on eliminating threats in the outskirts first and foremost. For about 20 years he did this, and gained enough notoriety and became knowledgeable enough about the outskirts to earn himself the title The Yellow King. Recognized for his feats defeating both monsters inside and outside of the City walls, he wore this title with grace and tact. Though, this peaceful life would soon come to an end as he led a small expedition to a place known as Carcosa. Carcosa’s the remnants of what used to be a civilization, though who occupied it still remains a mystery. Yellow brick walls, large black domes and towers stretching past the heavens, it seemed like Carcosa was a goldmine of knowledge and discovery. However, upon exploring Carcosa, the small group of explorers stumbled upon the wreckage of a library. This library would be Hastur’s undoing, as he read the book. It drove him mad, the powerful color fixer, strong in both mind and body, couldn’t handle whatever it was in that novel, and killed the small group of explorers he considered friends and colleagues. Making a mad dash to the city, he tried to explain to the Hana Association what happened, though they did not take kindly to his ravings and delusions and promptly put him under 24/7 surveillance under Professor Archer’s request. On a night known as the Yellow Eclipse, Hastur broke free from the binds that he was stuck in for months. These binds utilized the T-Corp, P-Corp and J-Corp technology to prevent the color fixer from escaping. It was only Hastur’s begs and pleas that convinced Professor Archer to release him, finding the binds they trapped him under inhumane. Professor Archer was the first to die on the Yellow Eclipse, followed by 150 other civilians of P-Corp. Hastur woke up covered in the remains of civilians in a P-Corp under turmoil, while the city itself was fine, the mountain of bodies he laid on top of horrified and disgusted him. In between flashes of delusion, mania, psychosis and madness induced by the book, he had brief moments of sanity where he was able to contact a colleague asking for a favor. Using J-Corp technology, he locked away his memories in the book he soon titled the King in Yellow. Castaigne woke up, scared, alone with only the book in front of him and an LCB employee offering him a job. He accepted it, and now lives his life as a Freelance sinner, sent to wherever needs him the most at the time. He swears up and down, one day he will open the book and he will remember who the powerful king was– though perhaps it's better forgotten. Carcosa, The Yellow King, Hastur – all of it forgotten and kept under a tight lock to never be removed, though it's inevitable one day, he will remember.Trivia
- Castaigne’s sinner symbol is the Yellow Sign from the king in yellow. The black sun from Carcosa serves as the backdrop, while the sign itself has a key symbol, and the crown has a lock, symbolizing the unknown nature of his history as The Yellow King.
- Castaigne is represented by the ⚖️ emoji.
- Castaigne’s particulars are listed as “Flamboyant”, “prince complex” and “better than you.”
- Castaigne is named after the protagonist of the short story, Repairer of Reputations, written by Robert Chambers.
- Castaigne’s quite divorced from the short story other than the weapon he wields, however he does hold the same delusions that the novel’s Castaigne has, believing they are both the titular King in Yellow. Carcosa comes from the short stories as well as a cursed city that drives people mad upon seeing it. Much like the story, Hastur was driven mad upon finding out the truth about the City via the knowledge he discovered from Carcosa.
- During HamHamPangPang's Limbus Company Pop-up theme, one of the available menu items was "Sinner Soul Food" which changed every week to be a different meal associated with one of the twelve playable Sinners. If Castiagne had a meal, it would be grilled cheese and butternut squash soup because of the associated yellows, and also because it is his favorite food.

Mirror World
With Mortal Pangs
This is a novel being written by my friend, you can view his site hereIn this world, Castaigne is sent to the 1890s in Providence, Rhode Island. Not at all related to Limbus, but it is a mirror world for him. Castaigne's a fragment of the King in Yellow, a humanization of a god in a way. He, however, is unaware of his eldritch roots and instead is an amnesiac who searches for the answers in occult circles and high society, hoping that perhaps someone knowledgeable and rich enough can tell him where he came from. Of course, having exhausted all leads, he decides to contact people isolated from the circles he often frequents, and meets the protagonists of the novel. In this world, he has the same strangely yellow eyes, though they look more amber, and his hair is a normal honey blonde. He's not as egotistical, and a tad more manipulative with an air of fake politeness that puts people off more than convinces them he's a real person. Masking his eccentricities and flaws, Castaigne is more of a doll than a person, being whatever is needed at the moment to appease whoever he needs to if it means he gets answers. Docile, flamboyant and polite, his ego is hidden underneath his pleasant smile and charming personality. Though, he does believe he's superior in many ways. He knows he was someone important in his past life, he just needs to remember it. He has a tendency to drive people who meet him mad, which leads to its own host of problems.
Short Stories
The rotting of Hastur.
“Along the shore the cloud waves break…” Hastur sang, though his voice cracked and broke with each syllable. Archer was exhausted, watching over the man who was once his pupil be reduced into this. The man that sat on his knees in front of him was not the same Hastur he taught 25 years ago. No, the Hastur in front of him was someone completely different. His once bright yellow eyes and short blonde hair was replaced by a dull empty stare only made duller by the dark blue, bruised eyebags beneath his eyes. The short blonde hair was long enough to fall down his bony shoulders and touch the ground from where he was sitting on the floor. His hands were chained to the wall, and they were frail. Wings, it was disgusting to look at. The once well built color fixer of a man now frail and shaking. His head was dropped low, his legs curled up beneath him as he sang. His voice hurt Archer's head. It almost didn't sound human, the way each word was said like it was the first time Hastur's muttered a word. He enunciated each letter wrong, he croaked and whined out each falsetto. Yet, it haunted him. “The twin suns sink behind the lake…” Hastur lacked any rhythm, any melody. He spoke melodically more than singing half the time, and the other half he wailed like he was both a child and elder at the same time. Hastur wasn't human anymore. His voice was a booming, overwhelming angry thing. Yet, it was pathetic. Broken. Months. Months of this, watching him beg and scream and cry, asking to be let out. For anyone to hear him, to understand him. His agonies, his pains. He hurt himself — he hurt others — he hurt Archer all in the pursuit of truth. And Archer stood there, staring at the camera, and listened. “The shadows lengthen in Carcosa.” Carcosa. That damned city that he was starting to believe did not exist. The city that tore Hastur's mind apart and reduced him to this. That book that anyone refused to open for the fear of whatever it contained being truly evil and heinous. For it tore apart the Yellow King and massacred the expedition team. For they could not risk it. And Archer watched with bated breath and a resigned guilt. And Hastur begged, screamed into the room, his voice echoing. He screamed about the truth, or so he claimed. About the gods we could not see, beyond the Wings, and beyond the “screen”— he raved about it not being real. That there was something more we would never see. And Archer turned off the Camera. He couldn't watch this shit much longer. Let Hastur scream, he'll be unheard anyways. No one but Archer would hear, no one bothered to check up on him. Rehabilitate, they said. Hastur screamed. Archer listened.
